Mars spacecraft, including MAVEN, reveal comet flyby effects on Martian atmosphere

Two NASA and one European spacecraft have gathered new information about the basic properties of a wayward comet that buzzed by Mars Oct. 19, directly detecting its effects on the Martian atmosphere. Debris from the comet, known officially as Comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring, caused an intense meteor shower and added a new layer of ions, or charged particles, to the ionosphere.

Flickering black hole at center of IC 310 shaking up ideas on how jets form

(Phys.org) —A very large team of astronomers and astrophysics from a wide variety of countries has contributed to a research paper published in the journal Science, describing observations made of a black hole at the center of the IC 310 galaxy—a black hole that was observed with a flickering jet that didn't conform to existing theories. The team offers possible explanations for the unique type of flickering observed and suggests more research will need to be done before any real conclusions can be drawn.

It is a galaxy remarkable for its webs of shredded clouds and flame-like plumes of glowing hydrogen blasting out from its central regions where young stars are being born 10 times faster than they are inside in our Milky Way Galaxy.

The Map of Dione

This cylindrical projection global map is one of six new color maps of Saturn's midsized icy moons, constructed using 10 years of image data from the Cassini spacecraft. Discovered by Cassini (the astronomer) in 1684, Dione is about 1,120 kilometers across. Based on data extending from infrared to ultraviolet, the full resolution of this latest space-age map is 250 meters per pixel. The remarkable brightness difference between the tidally locked moon's lighter leading hemisphere (right) and darker trailing hemisphere clearly stands out. Like other Saturn moons orbiting within the broad E-ring, Dione's leading hemisphere is kept shiny as it picks up a coating of the faint ring's icy material. The E-ring material is constantly replenished by geysers on moon Enceladus' south pole. Lighter, younger surface fractures also appear to cross the dark, cratered trailing hemisphere.

"[This is] the most recent NASA Hubble Space Telescope view of an unusual phenomenon in space called a light echo. Light from a star that erupted nearly five years ago continues propagating outward through a cloud of dust surrounding the star. The light reflects or "echoes" off the dust and then travels to Earth."

John Bell exhibition features CERN-inspired art

LHC 1, digital print (Image: Lucy McKenna)

This week the exhibition Action at a distance: the life and legacy of John Stewart Bell opened at the Naughton Gallery in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Bell’s theorem. The exhibition, which runs until 30 November, celebrates the life of one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century, John Stewart Bell.

Among the eight artists exhibiting work is Lucy McKenna from Ireland, who took part in the 2012 Tweetup at CERN. A tweetup is a social media event where visitors come for a special tour and use the social media platform Twitter to talk about their experience in real time. During her visit to the control room of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, McKenna took a photograph of a scrap of paper showing a hand-drawn diagram. The shapes and symbols in the diagram include numbers, arrows and a graph relating the LHC. "I’m particularly interested in the apophenia that occurs from mirroring the data, giving rise to shapes appearing to the human eye that aren’t actually there," she says.

John Stewart Bell formulated a theorem that physicists, philosophers and historians now consider to be one of the most significant developments in quantum theory. His proof of non-locality, which was published on 4 November 1964, revolutionized the understanding of quantum theory and the nature of the physical universe.

Astronomy: Debris-strewn exoplanetary construction yards

Over the past few years, astronomers have found an incredible diversity in the architecture of exoplanetary systems, as well as the planets themselves. A survey using the sharp view of the Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a similar diversity in the debris systems that coincide with the formation of exoplanets. These circumstellar dusty disks are likely generated by collisions between objects left over from planet formation around stars. The survey's results suggest that there is some sort of interdependence between a planet and the accompanying debris system.
