Saturn Solar Eclipse Posters

Here's a great poster featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: space, astronomy, saturn, stars, planets, earth, cassini, sun, exploration, rings, moons

You may think that this is a fake image, but it is actually a real photo taken from the Cassini space craft of Saturn eclipsing the Sun. The rings glow brightly as the light filters through them and the reflect that light all the way around to the back of the planet creating a surreal effect. A special surprise in the photo is that, just to the left of the rings, that bright blue dot is Earth, where you're sitting right now. This is truly a fascinating and beautiful image. How to grow a microscopic alien garden

Science Focus

original post »

Some sculptors work in marble, others in wood… but Harvard University biomineralization researcher Wim Noorduin creates his masterpieces inside a beaker. You'd be hard-pressed to put his flowery sculptures on a regular museum pedestal, though. They're actually microscopic crystal structures many times smaller than the width of a human hair.

(Wim Noorduin/World Science Festival)

(More from World Science Festival: Six tiny scientific mistakes that created huge disasters)

Minerals can naturally assemble into impressive shapes, even at very tiny scales, and Noorduin's scientific research...

Your state bird could be extinct by 2080

Science Focus

original post »

By 2080, the skies over North America could be much emptier. A recent report from the National Audubon Society, compiled from data collected over 30 years of bird counts and surveys, shows that more than half of North America's most iconic birds are in serious danger. Of the 588 bird species surveyed, 314 are at risk for losing significant amounts of their habitat to a changing climate.

"Birds are a good barometer of the overall health and wellbeing of the natural systems we depend on for food, water, and clear air," Audubon chief scientist Gary Langham wrote in an email. "If half the birds...

Keyhole Nebula and Digitus Impudicus Rectangle Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: kndigimp, peel off, galaxies and stars, keyhole nebula, carina nebula, massive stars, hubble space telescope, digitus impudicus, complex structure

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series Details of a mysterious, complex structure within the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) are revealed by this image of the 'Keyhole Nebula, ' obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The picture is a montage assembled from four different April 1999 telescope pointings with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, which used six different colour filters. The picture is dominated by a large, approximately circular feature, which is part of the Keyhole Nebula, named in the 19th century by Sir John Herschel. This region, about 8000 light-years from Earth, is located adjacent to the famous explosive variable star Eta Carinae, which lies just outside the field of view toward the upper right. The Carina Nebula also contains several other stars that are among the hottest and most massive known, each about 10 times as hot, and 100 times as massive, as our Sun.

Orion Launch

Headed for two orbits of planet Earth and a splashdown in the Pacific, Orion blazed into the early morning sky on Friday at 7:05am ET. The spacecraft was launched atop a United Launch Aliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Its first voyage into space on an uncrewed flight test, the Orion traveled some 3,600 miles from Earth, about 15 times higher than the orbital altitude of the International Space Station. In fact, Orion traveled farther into space than any spacecraft designed for astronauts since the Apollo missions to the Moon. The Orion crew module reached speeds of 20,000 miles per hour and temperatures approaching 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere about 4.5 hours after launch.

This is a mosaic image, one of the largest ever taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of the Crab Nebula, a six-light-year-wide expanding remnant of a star's supernova explosion. Japanese and Chinese astronomers recorded this violent event nearly 1,000 years ago in 1054, as did, almost certainly, Native Americans.
