There will never be another space race

Science Focus

original post »

Ellen Stofan, NASA's chief scientist, saw her first rocket launch at age 4. Her father worked at NASA as an engineer, and the thrill of space exploration captured her imagination from an early age. But at a Future Tense film screening of The Dish in Washington D.C. last week, Stofan acknowledged that for many people she meets, what first sparked a space obsession was the Apollo program — President John F. Kennedy's audacious commitment in 1961 to putting Americans on the moon before the end of the decade.

Today, NASA's goal to put astronauts on Mars by the 2030s could be a similarly unifying...

New Horizons spacecraft comes out of hibernation for Pluto flyby

Science Focus

original post »

Yesterday, NASA announced that its New Horizons probe, destined for a 2015 rendezvous with the dwarf planet Pluto, had successfully emerged from hibernation. This puts everything in place for the spacecraft to start the first up-close observations of Pluto on January 15, 2015—only four days short of the nine-year anniversary of its launch.

Unlike the Rosetta mission, which went into a single long, deep hibernation, multiple periods of hibernation were planned for New Horizons. During its nine-year trip to Pluto, the probe went into 18 different hibernation periods. It wasn't completely shut down during these periods, either; its flight computer was actively monitoring it and broadcast a weekly status message. Its wake-up periods were also used to check out the hardware that had been put to sleep.

But this rest period is over, and everything on board will be getting a full check-up before observations begin next month. By May, New Horizons' cameras will be able to image Pluto and its moons with a higher resolution than the Hubble telescope can provide. The probe will fly through the system with a closest approach scheduled for July 14, 2015.

Star Birth in Constellation Cygnus, The Swan Stickers

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous star forming region in Constellation Cygnus (The Swan). This Hubble image shows a dust-rich, interstellar gas cloud with a new-born star in the centre of the hour-glass shape. The glowing blue of the hydrogen in this nebula is due to the jets being emitted from the forming star as dust falls into into it and this causes the heating and turbulence of the hydrogen. The star, known as S106 IR, is reaching the end of its birth and will soon enter the much quieter period of adulthood known as the main stage.

Can astronomy explain the biblical Star of Bethlehem?

Bright stars top Christmas trees in Christian homes around much of the world. The faithful sing about the Star of Wonder that guided the wise men to a manger in the little town of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. They're commemorating the Star of Bethlehem described by the Evangelist Matthew in the New Testament. Is the star's biblical description a pious fiction or does it contain some astronomical truth?

Carina Nebula - Breathtaking Universe Sticker

tagged with: stlrnrsry, star clusters, galaxies, awesome astronomy pictures, constellation puppis, the stern, star nurseries, nebulae, outer space exploration, universe photographs, starfields, european southern observatory, eso, vista

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series

A gorgeous set of oval stickers showing the area surrounding the stellar cluster NGC 2467, located in the southern constellation of Puppis ("The Stern"). With an age of a few million years at most, it is a very active stellar nursery, where new stars are born continuously from large clouds of dust and gas.

The image, looking like a colourful cosmic ghost or a gigantic celestial Mandrill, contains the open clusters Haffner 18 (centre) and Haffner 19 (middle right: it is located inside the smaller pink region - the lower eye of the Mandrill), as well as vast areas of ionised gas.

The bright star at the centre of the largest pink region on the bottom of the image is HD 64315, a massive young star that is helping shaping the structure of the whole nebular region.

Hunt for Big Bang particles offering clues to the origin of the universe

Billions upon billions of neutrinos speed harmlessly through everyone's body every moment of the day, according to cosmologists. The bulk of these subatomic particles are believed to come straight from the Big Bang, rather than from the sun or other sources. Experimental confirmation of this belief could yield seminal insights into the early universe and the physics of neutrinos. But how do you interrogate something so elusive that it could zip through a barrier of iron a light-year thick as if it were empty space?
