A new way to view Titan: 'Despeckle' it

During 10 years of discovery, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has pulled back the smoggy veil that obscures the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Cassini's radar instrument has mapped almost half of the giant moon's surface; revealed vast, desert-like expanses of sand dunes; and plumbed the depths of expansive hydrocarbon seas. What could make that scientific bounty even more amazing? Well, what if the radar images could look even better?

Scientists go to great lengths to extend superlow friction

(Phys.org)—When nanosized pieces of graphite slide against each other, there can be virtually no friction between them. For many years, superlow friction, or "superlubricity," was known to exist only on the nanoscale. Then in 2012, scientists first demonstrated superlubricity beyond the nanoscale when they discovered the phenomenon in micrometer-sized graphite. Building on this and related research, scientists in a new study have now theoretically shown that superlow friction could extend to lengths of tens of centimeters.

Social network structure helps trends emerge from simple interactions

Science Focus

original post »

Everyone knows that you want skinny jeans tucked into your boots. Ten years ago everyone knew that you wanted boot cut jeans to go over your boots. But how does everyone know these things? How does one option out of all the possible alternatives get chosen as the standard and then reach universal acceptance?

The origin and emergence of social conventions has long beguiled cognitive scientists, sociologists, linguists, and philosophers. Prominent ideas have assumed that institutionalized mechanisms—like a centralized authority or incentives for collective agreement—are required for shared conventions to become prevalent. Newer social evolutionary ideas, by contrast, have suggested that networks of locally interacting individuals can spontaneously and unintentionally self-organize to produce global coordination, even in the absence of formal institutions.

This sort of self-organization has been very difficult to demonstrate, especially on any meaningful scale. Now, a mathematician and a sociologist have teamed up to show that global social conventions can in fact emerge spontaneously from local interactions, even though the people involved have no idea that they are coordinating anything. There's just one condition: the people have to be hyperconnected.

Aurora on Ice

Not from a snowglobe, this expansive fisheye view of ice and sky was captured on February 1, from Jökulsárlón Beach, southeast Iceland, planet Earth. Chunks of glacial ice on the black sand beach glisten in the light of a nearly full moon surrounded by a shining halo. The 22 degree lunar halo itself is created by ice crystals in high, thin clouds refracting the moonlight. Despite the bright moonlight, curtains of aurora still dance through the surreal scene. In early February, their activity was triggered by Earth's restless magnetosphere and the energetic wind from a coronal hole near the Sun's south pole. Bright Jupiter, also near opposition, is visible at the left, beyond the icy lunar halo.

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A beautiful space photograph featuring the 7500 light year distant Carina Nebula. This Hubble image shows rich, interstellar gas clouds feeding the formation of new stars. As a proto star forms, the gas clouds get dragged to its surface and some gets emitted as tight jets of material travelling at hundreds of miles per second. These in turn help sculpt the gas clouds into weird and grotesque shapes, some looking like strange worms, swimming through space.
