Black phosphorus is new 'wonder material' for improving optical communication

In a new study, researchers used an ultrathin black phosphorus film -- only 20 layers of atoms -- to demonstrate high-speed data communication on nanoscale optical circuits. The devices showed vast improvement in efficiency over comparable devices using the earlier "wonder material" graphene.

Pressure is on to find the cause for vision changes in space

The human body is approximately 60 percent fluids. During spaceflight, these fluids shift to the upper body and move across blood vessel and cell membranes differently than they normally do on Earth. One of the goals of the Fluid Shifts investigation, launching to the International Space Station this spring, is to test the relationship between those fluid shifts and a pattern NASA calls visual impairment and intracranial pressure syndrome, or VIIP. It involves changes in vision and the structure of the eyes and indirect signs of increased pressure in the brain, and investigators say more than half of American astronauts have experienced it during long spaceflights.

12.7 million metric tons of plastic pour into our oceans annually

Science Focus

original post »

Since their invention roughly 75 years ago, plastics have become increasingly prevalent in the consumer marketplace. Today, we use and dispose of plastics on a daily basis, in products like bottled water and grocery bags. Plastics now represent a significant portion of the solid waste we generate.

Unfortunately, plastic wastes are polluting our oceans. And it is thought that the majority of plastic that ends up there is originating on land. Plastic debris entering the ocean from coastlines can have dangerous effects on the oceans themselves, their wildlife, and even humans. Over time, plastics degrade into small pieces that are easy for small animals to ingest. This decay process also makes it difficult to pinpoint pollution sources after plastics enter the ocean.

The best strategy to mitigate the harmful effects we're seeing is simply to reduce the input of plastics into the ocean. However, only recently have scientists been able to figure out where all of it's coming from. Today, they've released a new estimate of the input of plastics from populations living within 50 km of coastlines worldwide.

Carina Nebula by the Hubble Space Telescope Room Graphic

Here's a great wall decal featuring a beautiful image from deep space

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image captures the chaotic activity atop a pillar of gas and dust, three light-years tall, which is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks. This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina. The image celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hubble's launch and deployment into an orbit around the Earth. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from super-hot newborn stars in the nebula are shaping and compressing the pillar, causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of hot ionised gas can be seen flowing off the ridges of the structure, and wispy veils of gas and dust, illuminated by starlight, float around its towering peaks. The denser parts of the pillar are resisting being eroded by radiation. Nestled inside this dense mountain are fledgling stars. Long streamers of gas can be seen shooting in opposite directions from the pedestal at the top of the image. Another pair of jets is visible at another peak near the centre of the image. These jets, (known as HH 901 and HH 902, respectively, are signposts for new star birth and are launched by swirling gas and dust discs around the young stars, which allow material to slowly accrete onto the stellar surfaces. Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on 1-2 February 2010. The colours in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulphur (red).
