DARPA’s prosthetic hand allows paralyzed patient to “feel” pressure on fingers

Science Focus

original post »
DARPA

A 28-year-old quadriplegic is the first person to experience tactile sensation through a prosthetic hand, according to DARPA. The organisation accomplished this feat by routing signals from torque sensors housed in the mechanical prosthesis to electrode arrays attached to the volunteer's sensory cortex—the part of the brain that identifies stimuli like touch.

"By wiring a sense of touch from a mechanical hand directly into the brain, this work shows the potential for seamless bio-technological restoration of near-natural function," said DARPA program manager Justin Sanchez in a press release.

The prosthesis used in the experiment was created by the Applied Physics Lab at John Hopkins University, and is capable of detecting when pressure is applied to a finger. DARPA reported nearly 100 percent accuracy in an initial set of tests. Despite being blindfolded, the volunteer, whose name is being withheld, was able to tell which extremity was being touched, and even when researchers were attempting to trick him.

Fires of the Flame Nebula - NGC 2024 in Orion Wall Graphic

Here's a great wall decal featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: breathtaking astronomy images, hfflmnb, flames nebulae, star forming, orion constellation, young stars clusters, orions belt, orion the hunter, european southern observatory, eso, vista

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous outer space picture featuring the spectacular star-forming region known as the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024, in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter) and its surroundings.

In views of this evocative object in visible light the core of the nebula is completely hidden behind obscuring dust, but in this VISTA view, taken in infrared light, the cluster of very young stars at the object's heart is revealed. The wide-field VISTA view also includes the glow of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, just below centre, and the ghostly outline of the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) towards the lower right.

The bright bluish star towards the right is one of the three bright stars forming the Belt of Orion. The image was created from VISTA images taken through J, H and Ks filters in the near-infrared part of the spectrum.

The image shows about half the area of the full VISTA field and is about 40 x 50 arcminutes in extent. The total exposure time was 14 minutes and was the first to be released publicly from VISTA, the world's largest survey telescope.

Upcoming events at CERN

As summer draws to a close, we look forward to the upcoming events at CERN and the surrounding area. Here are just a few of the events in store.

Friday, 25 September: CERN Photowalk

CERN is teaming up with several physics laboratories for an international photography competition: The Global Physics Photowalk. This Friday, selected photographers will be given the unique opportunity to explore the facilities of the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. The best photos will be chosen by a local jury and exhibited in 2016. Each laboratory will also choose three photos to be entered for the international competition, which will run until the end of the year. In this case, the winning photos will be selected by a jury and a public vote. They will be exhibited and also featured in the CERN Courier and Symmetry.

Follow the hashtag #PhysPics15 for updates on the day and find out more about the CERN photowalk here.

Friday, 25 September: Researchers’ Night/POP Science

CERN will be celebrating the 10th annual European Researchers’ night, an event celebrated in more than 300 cities in Europe. CERN, in collaboration with various partners, has organised the POP Science project that will take place at a shopping centre on the outskirts of Geneva. The programme is a unique blend of science, cinema, comics, poetry, music, games and encounters with artists and scientists. The main goal of the event is to bring together the general public and the exciting world of research and to show that science is fun and accessible to everyone.

Find out more about POP Science here, and events going on around Europe here.

Friday - Sunday, 2-4 October: THE Port Hackathon

THE Port Hackathon is a project designed to combine creative minds from CERN and non-profit organisations in interdisciplinary teams to work on humanitarian technology related benefits to society. The topics selected for the 2015 edition are inspired by the Red Cross, United Nations and many other NGOs in and around Geneva. Six inter-disciplinary teams with about 10 members each had 6 weeks of preparation with video-conference meetings and a 60 hour final hackathon to build working prototypes and tangible solutions for real life humanitarian problems.

The results will be webcast on Sunday. Find out more about the project here.

Friday, 9 October: TEDxCERN

With the theme ‘Breaking the rules,’ TEDxCERN 2015 brings you ideas that challenge the norm with solutions that could transform lives. From using tangible interfaces that allow human interaction via e-devices, 3D technology as a means to revolutionize education and product fabrication, to exploring transformations of matter into habitable structures, TEDxCERN’s speakers this year bring you their visions for a new world. These ideas push beyond the boundaries of academia to inform our present and change our future.

Find out more about the event, the speakers and the webcast here.

A cosmic rose with many names

This new image of the rose-colored star forming region Messier 17 was captured by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. It is one of the sharpest images showing the entire nebula and not only reveals its full size but also retains fine detail throughout the cosmic landscape of gas clouds, dust and newborn stars.

tagged with: breathtaking astronomy images, european southern observatory, eglneb, young stars clusters, star forming nebulae, messier 16 ngc 6611, pillars of creation, eagle nebula, galaxies, outer space picture, eso, vista

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A breathtaking outer space picture showing a spectacular three-colour composite mosaic image of the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16, or NGC 6611). It's based on images obtained with the Wide-Field Imager camera on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory.

At the centre, the so-called "Pillars of Creation" can be seen and this wide-field image shows not only the central pillars, but also several others in the same star-forming region, as well as a huge number of stars in front of, in, or behind the Eagle Nebula.

The cluster of bright stars to the upper right is NGC 6611, home to the massive and hot stars that illuminate the pillars. The "Spire" - another large pillar - is in the middle left of the image.
