The reins of Casimir: Engineered nanostructures could offer way to control quantum effect

You might think that a pair of parallel plates hanging motionless in a vacuum just a fraction of a micrometer away from each other would be like strangers passing in the night—so close but destined never to meet. Thanks to quantum mechanics, you would be wrong.

Galaxy Found in Hubble Survey Has Farthest Confirmed Distance

Get larger image formats

A team of astronomers has discovered a galaxy that sets the current distance record for galaxies whose distance has been definitively measured by spectroscopic redshift. The galaxy is seen as it was at a time just 700 million years after the Big Bang, when the universe was only about 5 percent of its current age of 13.8 billion years. This galaxy and dozens of others were selected for follow-up observations from the approximately 100,000 galaxies discovered in the Hubble Space Telescope CANDELS survey (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey). The team used the Keck I Telescope in Hawaii to measure the redshift of the CANDELS galaxy, designated z8_GND_5296, at 7.51. This is the highest galaxy redshift ever confirmed. The spectral redshift of galaxies is caused by the expansion of space from the Big Bang.

Fabiola Gianotti appointed to UN’s Scientific Advisory Board

Former spokesperson for the ATLAS Experiment, Fabiola Gianotti, is among the 26 scientists who have been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon.

"I am honoured to be on such a prestigious panel and glad that a particle physicist has been included in the board, as this recognises the importance of fundamental research. I hope we can contribute to finding ways for society to deploy innovation and progress in science and technology to the advantage of a better world," said Gianotti.

The Scientific Advisory Board was set up on the recommendation of a report – Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing published in January 2012 to "strengthen the interface between policy and science".

The board represents experts from technology and engineering to medicine and agricultural science. They will provide advice on science, technology and innovation for sustainable development to UN’s executive heads and Secretary-General. UNESCO will host the board’s secretariat.

Besides Gianotti, four other physicists have been appointed to the board: Susan Avery, president and director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Vladimir Fortov, president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and nuclear physicist Dong-Pil Min from Seoul National University.

"It brings together scientists of international stature and will serve as a global reference point to improve links between science and public policies," said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

The first meeting of the newly established board will take place at the start of 2014. The board members are appointed for two years with the possibility of renewal. The position is unpaid and the members are expected to "act in their personal capacity and will provide advice on a strictly independent basis".

Last December, the United Nations General Assembly granted CERN observer status, which allows CERN the right to participate in the work of the General Assembly and to attend its sessions as an observer.

Star Birth in Constellation Cygnus, The Swan Star Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous star forming region in Constellation Cygnus (The Swan). This Hubble image shows a dust-rich, interstellar gas cloud with a new-born star in the centre of the hour-glass shape. The glowing blue of the hydrogen in this nebula is due to the jets being emitted from the forming star as dust falls into into it and this causes the heating and turbulence of the hydrogen. The star, known as S106 IR, is reaching the end of its birth and will soon enter the much quieter period of adulthood known as the main stage.

CERN hosts Energy for sustainable science workshop

Today marks the start of a workshop at CERN on energy for sustainable science at research infrastructures. You can watch today’s talks via webcast from 2pm CET.

This three-day workshop focuses on energy management strategies at research infrastructures worldwide. It follows on from the first edition of the workshop held at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden in 2011.

Energy experts from public and private sectors are showcasing ways to recuperate waste heat, efficiently cool data centres and use green technologies and civil engineering solutions for sustainable campuses.

Today’s webcast talks begin with welcome speeches from the organisers (CERN, ERF and ESS) followed by plenary talks ranging from the energy policies of IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, and the European Commission, to energy management in Japan, European innovation, smart systems and efficient data centres.

Watch the webcast at 2pm CET

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous set of oval stickers showing the area surrounding the stellar cluster NGC 2467, located in the southern constellation of Puppis ("The Stern"). With an age of a few million years at most, it is a very active stellar nursery, where new stars are born continuously from large clouds of dust and gas.

The image, looking like a colourful cosmic ghost or a gigantic celestial Mandrill, contains the open clusters Haffner 18 (centre) and Haffner 19 (middle right: it is located inside the smaller pink region - the lower eye of the Mandrill), as well as vast areas of ionised gas.

The bright star at the centre of the largest pink region on the bottom of the image is HD 64315, a massive young star that is helping shaping the structure of the whole nebular region.
