In humans vs. AI poker competition, AI middle of the pack

Science Focus

original post »

For the last week, a poker-playing computer algorithm has been putting money on the line against four human players. The software, called Claudico, was developed by a team led by Carnegie Mellon computer scientist Tuomas Sandholm. After a week of games at a Pittsburgh casino, the program is currently down, but it's far from out.

An earlier version of Claudico managed to come in first at an all-algorithm poker tournament, so its creators were interested in seeing how it would do against top human players. To attract those, Microsoft Research put up a $100,000 purse. To provide some scientific value, the tournament has unusual rules: each hand the computer receives will also be given to a human player, so their actions and results can be compared. The tournament will also go on for another week to ensure that enough hands are dealt to get some statistically significant results.

Computers have solved Limit Texas Hold'em (in that they've generated an optimal strategy for every hand), but the tournament will use the no-limit form, which is significantly more complicated. To try to optimize Claudico's performance, the team used a supercomputing cluster with 16TB of RAM, which is needed to help hold as many of the possible outcomes of a given hand as possible.

Wreath Nebula in our awesome Milky Way Square Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: envelope sealers, star forming activity, wnmwbpt, interstellar gas clouds, milky way, wreath nebula, awesome astronomy images, metallic elements, new born stars, galaxies, dust clouds, star nurseries, young hot stars

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous outer space picture featuring the Wreath Nebula, located in our Milky way near the boundary between the constellations of Perseus and Taurus.
Tiny particles of dust, glowing warmly in the energy being radiated by the new-born star are similar to those in the composition of our Earthly smog. The red cloud is cooler than its environs and likely comprises more metallic elements as well.

A Dark and Dusty Sky

In the dusty sky toward the constellation Taurus and the Orion Arm of our Milky Way Galaxy, this broad mosaic follows dark and faint reflection nebulae along the region's fertile molecular cloud. The six degree wide field of view starts with long dark nebula LDN 1495 stretching from the lower left, and extends beyond the (upside down) bird-like visage of the Baby Eagle Nebula, LBN 777, at lower right. Small bluish reflection nebulae surround scattered fainter Taurus stars, sights often skipped over in favor of the constellation's better known, brighter celestial spectacles. Associated with the young, variable star RY Tau, the yellowish nebula VdB 27 is toward the upper left. Only 400 light-years or so distant, the Taurus molecular cloud is one of the closest regions of low-mass star formation. At that distance this dark vista would span over 40 light-years.

Semiliquid battery competitive with both Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors

(Phys.org)—A new semiliquid battery developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin has exhibited encouraging early results, encompassing many of the features desired in a state-of-the-art energy-storage device. In particular, the new battery has a working voltage similar to that of a lithium-ion battery, a power density comparable to that of a supercapacitor, and it can maintain its good performance even when being charged and discharged at very high rates.

Like the fury of a raging sea, this anniversary image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a bubbly ocean of glowing hydrogen, oxygen, and sulphur gas in the extremely massive and luminous molecular nebula Messier 17. This Hubble photograph captures a small region within Messier 17 (M17), a hotbed of star formation. M17, also known as the Omega or Swan Nebula, is located about 5500 light-years away in the Sagittarius constellation.

Star Birth in Constellation Cygnus, The Swan Square Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: envelope sealers, nebulae, gstlnrsr, rcw120, breathtaking astronomy images, star nurseries, ionised gas clouds, star forming regions, european southern observatory, clusters of stars, galaxies, eso, vista

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous star forming region in Constellation Cygnus (The Swan). This Hubble image shows a dust-rich, interstellar gas cloud with a new-born star in the centre of the hour-glass shape. The glowing blue of the hydrogen in this nebula is due to the jets being emitted from the forming star as dust falls into into it and this causes the heating and turbulence of the hydrogen. The star, known as S106 IR, is reaching the end of its birth and will soon enter the much quieter period of adulthood known as the main stage.
