Astronomers discover rare planet: Kepler-432b is a dense, massive celestial body with extreme seasons

Two research groups of astronomers have independently of each other discovered a rare planet. The celestial body, called Kepler-432b, is one of the most dense and massive planets known so far. The teams report that the planet has six times the mass of Jupiter, but about the same size. The shape and the size of its orbit are also unusual for a planet like Kepler-432b that is revolving around a giant star. In less than 200 million years, this "red giant" will most likely swallow up the planet.

Mismatched twin stars spotted in the delivery room

The majority of stars in our galaxy come in pairs. In particular, the most massive stars usually have a companion. These fraternal twins tend to be somewhat equal partners when it comes to mass -- but not always. In a quest to find mismatched star pairs known as extreme mass-ratio binaries, astronomers have discovered a new class of binary stars.

The FTC and New York AG cracking down on herbal supplements

Science Focus

original post »

Today, the attorney general of New York sent cease-and-desist letters to a set of major chain stores, asking them to stop sales of a number of herbal supplements that contained contaminants, lacked the promised ingredient, or both. His actions follow those of the Federal Trade Commission, which is going after the makers of the green coffee bean extract that was promoted by TV's popular Dr. Oz show.

The two cases have different origins. The New York one dates back to 2013, when researchers started performing DNA tests on a set of herbal remedies obtained in stores. These showed that many popular remedies didn't actually contain the species mentioned on the label and often contained extraneous plant matter—in some cases from plants that can also provoke significant biological responses.

That study helpfully identified DNA sequences that could be used to specifically detect the presence of specific species of medicinal herbs. The NY attorney general's office followed up on this approach, obtaining own-brand products from stores such as GNC, Target, Walgreen, and Wal-Mart. (The announcement says the investigation is ongoing, so more may be named later.) These products were subjected to DNA testing and again came up short, with Wal-Mart at the bottom; only four percent of its samples had evidence of the plant listed on the label. The overall rate here was just 21 percent, and many others contained contaminants. (Some of the products involved include Echinacea, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, and Ginkgo Biloba; see the announcement for a detailed list of the supplements and results.)

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A gorgeous design featuring a composite image of the Cat's Eye nebula from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope.
This famous nebula represents a phase of stellar evolution after a star like our Sun runs out of fuel. In this phase, a star becomes an expanding red giant and sheds some of its outer layers, eventually leaving behind a hot core that collapses to form a dense white dwarf star. A fast wind emanating from the hot core rams into the ejected atmosphere, pushes it outward, and creates the graceful filamentary structures.

Exploring the Antennae

Some 60 million light-years away in the southerly constellation Corvus, two large galaxies are colliding. The stars in the two galaxies, cataloged as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, very rarely collide in the course of the ponderous cataclysm, lasting hundreds of millions of years. But their large clouds of molecular gas and dust often do, triggering furious episodes of star formation near the center of the cosmic wreckage. Spanning about 500 thousand light-years, this stunning composited view also reveals new star clusters and matter flung far from the scene of the accident by gravitational tidal forces. The remarkable collaborative image is a mosaic constructed using data from small and large ground-based telescopes to bring out large-scale and faint tidal streams, composited with the bright cores imaged in extreme detail by the Hubble Space Telescope. Of course, the suggestive visual appearance of the extended arcing structures gives the galaxy pair its popular name - The Antennae.

Helix Nebula "Eye of God" Hubble Telescope Case For The iPad Mini

Here's a great iPad case from Zazzle featuring a Hubble-related design. Maybe you'd like to see your name on it? Click to personalize and see what it's like!

The Helix Nebula (also known as The Helix, NGC 7293, or Caldwell 63) is a large planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. The estimated distance is about 215 parsecs or 700 light-years. It is similar in appearance to the Ring Nebula, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are similar to the Dumbbell Nebula, varying only in its relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle. The Helix has often been referred to as the Eye of God on the Internet, since about 2003.
