Social sciences beat physical sciences in reaching funding equality

Science Focus

original post »

Grant funding is a key contributor to continued gender inequality within academia. Women receive smaller grants than men in biology, the physical sciences, and engineering. However, a new study published in Nature reports that, in the UK at least, social science funding doesn't show a similar gender bias when academic position is accounted for.

This study examined applications for UK Economic and Social Research Council Research Grants between 2008 and 2013. It tabulated the number of grant requests submitted by men and women, their success in earning grant awards, and the sizes of awarded grants. These data were analyzed using the UK government's information on the number of men and women in social science academic jobs in the UK.

The researchers found that, though women hold 48 percent of the academic jobs in social science, they make up just 41 percent of grant applicants, indicating a slight under-representation. The data from the Economic Social Research Council shows that 18 percent of both male and female applicants were successful in earning social science grants, indicating that men and women were equally likely to receive grant awards once you account for their lower application rate.

Tadpole Nebula, Auriga Constellation Square Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: envelope sealers, star forming activity, awesome astronomy images, tnitac, tadpole nebula, auriga constellation, interstellar gas clouds, new born stars, hot young stars, star nursery, dust clouds

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series An awesome outer space picture featuring the Tadpole Nebula, a star forming hub located about 12000 light years away in the Auriga constellation.
This nebula is brimming with new-born stars, many as young as only a million years of age. It's called the Tadpole nebula because the masses of hot, young stars are blasting out ultraviolet radiation that has etched the gas into two tadpole-shaped pillars, called Sim 129 and130, the yellow forms that seem to be swimming away from the three red stars close to the centre of the picture.

A Prominence on the Sun

This eerie landscape of incandescent plasma suspended in looping and twisted magnetic fields stretched toward the Sun's eastern horizon on September 16. Captured through a backyard telescope and narrowband filter in light from ionized hydrogen, the scene reveals a gigantic prominence lofted above the solar limb. Some 600,000 kilometers across, the magnetized plasma wall would dwarf worlds of the Solar System. Ruling gas giant Jupiter can only boast a diameter of 143,000 kilometers or so, while planet Earth's diameter is less than 13,000 kilometers. Known as a hedgerow prominence for its appearance, the enormous structure is far from stable though, and such large solar prominences often erupt.
