"This loose collection of stars is actually a dwarf irregular galaxy, called Holmberg IX. It resides just off the outer edge of M81, a large spiral galaxy in Ursa Major. This image was taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys in early 2006. Holmberg IX is of the so-called Magellanic type of galaxy, as its size and irregularity in structure are similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud, a neighbor to our own Milky Way. Holmberg IX was first discovered by astronomer Sidney van den Bergh in 1959, and cataloged as DDO 66. The galaxy received its "Holmberg IX" naming when it was discussed in Eric Holmberg's study of groups of galaxies ten years later. It is suspected that the dwarf galaxy was created as a result of a galactic interaction between M81 and neighboring galaxy M82."

Mystery sea of stars? Rocket experiment finds surprising cosmic light

Using an experiment carried into space on a NASA suborbital rocket, astronomers have detected a diffuse cosmic glow that appears to represent more light than that produced by known galaxies in the universe. The discovery suggests that many such previously undetected stars permeate what had been thought to be dark spaces between galaxies, forming an interconnected sea of stars.

Hubble surveys debris-strewn exoplanetary construction yards

(Phys.org) —Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have completed the largest and most sensitive visible-light imaging survey of dusty debris disks around other stars. These dusty disks, likely created by collisions between leftover objects from planet formation, were imaged around stars as young as 10 million years old and as mature as more than 1 billion years old.

Hubble Surveys Debris-Strewn Exoplanetary Construction Yards

Get larger image formats

Over the past few years, astronomers have found an incredible diversity in the architecture of exoplanetary systems, as well as the planets themselves. A survey using the sharp view of the Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a similar diversity in the debris systems that coincide with the formation of exoplanets. These circumstellar dusty disks are likely generated by collisions between objects left over from planet formation around stars. The survey's results suggest that there is some sort of interdependence between a planet and the accompanying debris system.

Graphenea is Named in the 2014 Global Cleantech 100’s Ones to Watch List

San Sebastian, Spain – November 6, 2014: Graphenea, a producer of high-quality graphene, today announced it was named in the 2014 Global Cleantech 100’s Ones to Watch list, produced by Cleantech Group, whose mission is to connect corporates to sustainable innovation through the i3 market intelligence platform, expert consulting services, and global events.

The inaugural Ones to Watch list seeks to highlight a group of upcoming companies that are catching the eye of leading players in the market. They are companies who did not quite have enough market support to make the 2014 Global Cleantech 100 list itself, who have never been on a previous Global Cleantech 100 list, but who clearly carry pockets of strong support among key corporations, investors, and Cleantech Group analysts within the Cleantech Group’s Expert Panel. The Expert Panel consists of an influential group of 84 panelists who help determine the annual Global Cleantech 100 list. The diversity of panelists results in a list of companies that command an expansive base of respect and support from many important players within the global cleantech innovation ecosystem.

We are thrilled to be selected for the “ones to watch” list,” said Graphenea CEO Jesus de la Fuente. “This selection adds to our growing momentum and is a clear result of the hard work that everyone has put in over the past years. I would like to extend my congratulations and thanks to the entire Graphenea team. We will continue to innovate and contribute to this sector as well as others."

"We are excited to release a second list under the Global Cleantech 100 program, to recognise 60 other rising stars that, from the process we ran, we can see are catching the attention of some important players in the market,” said Richard Youngman, Cleantech Group’s Managing Director, Europe & Asia and creator of the Global Cleantech 100 program. “We look forward to following their progress, and hopefully seeing some of them graduate to future editions of the Global Cleantech 100.

This year, a record number of nominations for the annual Global Cleantech 100 list were received: 5,995 distinct companies from 60 countries. These companies were weighted and scored to create a short list of 327 companies. Short-listed nominees were reviewed by Cleantech Group’s Expert Panel, resulting in the inaugural Ones to Watch list in addition to annual the Global Cleanteh 100 list. To qualify for the both lists, companies must be independent, for-profit, cleantech companies that are not listed on any major stock exchange.

  • The complete list of the Global Cleantech 100’s Ones to Watch list was revealed on November 6th. See the full list at http://www.cleantech.com/indexes/global-cleantech-100/global-cleantech-100-ones-to-watch-3/

  • For complete information on Graphenea’s leadership within the cleantech space, access i3 by visiting i3connect.com — Cleantech Group’s leading market intelligence platform — and search for Graphenea

How science can help you survive scary movies

Science Focus

original post »

My mother's favorite story to tell in October features me as a 3-year-old, sitting down to breakfast at a local diner. The restaurant's walls and windows were bedecked with Halloween cutouts — think cartoonish ghosts, goblins, and, of course, vampires. I took one look at Dracula and went into a full-blown meltdown, so my mom's friend hurried over and covered him up with a napkin.

Upon her return, I leaned over and whispered, "I can still see his toes."

I wish I could say I've outgrown these anxieties about all things that go bump in the night. Alas, my Halloween nerves are as fragile now...

Why it's wise to gamble first, eat later

Science Focus

original post »

According to conventional wisdom, people in an agitated emotional state tend to make bad, impulsive decisions. Fear and anger often lead us to take actions we later regret.

But a more recent line of research suggests there is much to be said for the intuitive wisdom of the body. According to mind-body oriented scholars such as Antonio Damasio, uncomfortable sensations that inhibit our normal thought patterns can sometimes provide valuable guidance.

A research team led by Utrecht University psychologist Denise de Ridder suggests these thinkers are on to something — at least when the unpleasant...

Flying qubits make for a highly resilient quantum memory

(Phys.org) —In a quantum memory, the basic unit of data storage is the qubit. Because a qubit can exist in a superposition state of both "1" and "0" at the same time, it can process much more information than a classical bit. However, qubits are often very unstable due to decoherence, currently making them impractical for real-life memory storage.

Sh2-155: The Cave Nebula

This colorful skyscape features the dusty Sharpless catalog emission region Sh2-155, the Cave Nebula. In the composite image, data taken through narrowband filters tracks the glow of ionized sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in red, green, and blue hues. About 2,400 light-years away, the scene lies along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy toward the royal northern constellation of Cepheus. Astronomical explorations of the region reveal that it has formed at the boundary of the massive Cepheus B molecular cloud and the hot, young stars of the Cepheus OB 3 association. The bright rim of ionized interstellar gas is energized by radiation from the hot stars, dominated by the bright star just above picture center. Radiation driven ionization fronts are likely triggering collapsing cores and new star formation within. Appropriately sized for a stellar nursery, the cosmic cave is over 10 light-years across.

An animated 3D-study of Melotte 15

The open cluster centered in this image is known as Melotte 15 . Melotte 15 is embedded within a central portion of the much larger glowing nebula identified as IC 1805.
The interesting structure in the center of the image is a giant area of hydrogen gas that is caused to glow by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the massive stars of the Melotte 15 star cluster.
Dust and gas clouds are twisted by the pressure of the intense radiation, the solar wind.
This formation is estimated to be 7,500 light years away from Earth.
