Communicating with hypersonic vehicles in flight

Routine communications blackouts, between a re-entry spacecraft and ground control, can cause anxiety, as there is no way to know or control the location and state of the spacecraft from the ground, but researchers have now proposed a new way to maintain communication with spacecraft as they re-enter the atmosphere. The approach might also be applied to other hypersonic vehicles such as futuristic military planes and ballistic missiles.

Quantum bouncer keeps light off the dance floor

My favorite experiments are not necessarily the groundbreaking ones. I love those too, don't get me wrong; but I like the ones that make me take a good hard look at the way in which I picture the physics.

One critical skill in physics is knowing what to leave out. For instance, if I can predict and describe a physical system with classical physics, why add quantum mechanics? But a recent paper highlights that it is always important to bear in mind that every classical picture has a quantum background. You may be able to neglect that background, but should never forget that it is there.

Cavities and quantum states

The experiment involves thinking about optical cavities, which are sort of on the border between quantum and classical worlds. Normally, we think about optical cavities in terms of the color, or wavelength of light that an optical cavity will accept. The distance between the mirrors must be commensurate with the wavelength. This can be described by both classical and quantum physics. The amount of light in the cavity, however, is almost always thought of in terms of classical physics.

Tadpole Nebula, Auriga Constellation Square Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: envelope sealers, star forming activity, awesome astronomy images, tnitac, tadpole nebula, auriga constellation, interstellar gas clouds, new born stars, hot young stars, star nursery, dust clouds

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series An awesome outer space picture featuring the Tadpole Nebula, a star forming hub located about 12000 light years away in the Auriga constellation.
This nebula is brimming with new-born stars, many as young as only a million years of age. It's called the Tadpole nebula because the masses of hot, young stars are blasting out ultraviolet radiation that has etched the gas into two tadpole-shaped pillars, called Sim 129 and130, the yellow forms that seem to be swimming away from the three red stars close to the centre of the picture.

LightSail A

Hitching a ride to low Earth orbit, LightSail A accomplished a challenging test mission, unfurling its 32 square meter mylar solar sail on June 7. This dramatic image from one of the bread loaf sized spacecraft's fisheye cameras captures the deployed sail glinting in sunlight. Sail out and visible to Earthbound observers before its final orbit, LightSail A reentered the atmosphere last weekend. Its succesful technology demonstration paves the way for the LightSail B spacecraft, scheduled for launch in April 2016. Once considered the stuff of science fiction, sailing through space was suggested 400 years ago by astronomer Johannes Kepler who observed comet tails blown by the solar wind. But modern solar sail designs, like the one tested by LightSail A, rely on the small but continuous pressure from sunlight itself for thrust.

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series An amazing outer space picture featuring two interacting galaxies that together form the shape of a rose. The larger of the spiral galaxies, UGC 1810, has a disk that is twisted by the gravitational pull of its companion galaxy, UGC 1813.
Knots of young, hot blue stars bejewel the spirals arms in glistening starlight while below, its smaller, nearly edge-on companion is going through intense star formation at its centre, perhaps triggered by their encounter.

Pink Rose Galaxies Cover For The iPad Mini

Here's a great iPad case from Zazzle featuring a Hubble-related design. Maybe you'd like to see your name on it? Click to personalize and see what it's like!

In April 2011 for the 21st Anniversary of Hubble, NASA released a lovely image of two galaxies interacting to form what looks like a rose with stem. Together the pair are "Arp 273". The larger of the spiral galaxies UGC 1810 is being pulled into a distorted "rose" spiral thanks to to the gravitational influence of the companion "stem" galaxy below it (UGC 1813).
