There are advances being made almost daily in the disciplines required to make space and its contents accessible. This blog brings together a lot of that info, as it is reported, tracking the small steps into space that will make it just another place we carry out normal human economic, leisure and living activities.

Black hole hunters tackle a cosmic conundrum
Astrophysicists have not only proven that a supermassive black hole exists in a place where it isn't supposed to be, but in doing so have opened a new door to what things were like in the early universe.

Theoretical framework for graphene physics established
A team of researchers has established a theoretical framework to understand the elastic and electronic properties of graphene. Graphene, a single-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb-like lattice, is one of the simplest materials with unrivalled mechanical and electronic properties. The material has been hailed by scientists as an extremely good conductor of electrons due to its strength and its light weight.

Pulsing light may indicate supermassive black hole merger
As two galaxies enter the final stages of merging, scientists have theorized that the galaxies' supermassive black holes will form a 'binary,' or two black holes in such close orbit they are gravitationally bound to one another. In a new study, astronomers present direct evidence of a pulsing quasar, which may substantiate the existence of black hole binaries.

Understanding Greenland’s wild climate swings
Science Focus
original post »If we polled climate scientists for the weirdest thing we learned by drilling into Greenland’s ice, Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles would be strong contenders. During the colder parts of Greenland’s ice age history, it has frequently experienced a wicked case of climate whiplash. Parts of Greenland could endure a warming of 10 degrees Celsius in the space of a couple of decades. That would be followed by centuries of cooling and, eventually, another abrupt warming.
Look at ocean sediment cores in the Atlantic and you’ll see something else happening at the same time: sand and stones appearing in the seafloor mud, carried there by dirty, slowly melting icebergs. (In fact, some icebergs may have made it as far as Florida.) These impressive launches of iceberg armadas are called Heinrich events—and there’s clearly some connection between Heinrich and Dansgaard-Oeschger.
We’re pretty sure these wild events relate to the downward flow of salty, dense surface water in the North Atlantic, which completes the conveyor belt that turns northward-flowing surface water into southward-flowing deep water. If the salty surface water loses its greater density, the conveyor belt—and the warmth it carries northward—seizes up. Conversely, switching the conveyor belt back on can rapidly deliver warmth northward, which may explain some of the sudden warmings.

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A fantastic picture from our universe featuring the massive star factory known as the Trifid Nebula.
It was captured in all its glory with the Wide-Field Imager camera attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in northern Chile.
So named for the dark dust bands that trisect its glowing heart, the Trifid Nebula is a rare combination of three nebulae types that reveal the fury of freshly formed stars and point to more star birth in the future. The field of view of the image is approximately 13 x 17 arcminutes.
It's an awe-inspiring, breathtaking image that reveals some of the wonder that is our universe.

Cold Spot suggests largest structure in Universe: A supervoid 1.3 billion light years across
In 2004, astronomers examining a map of the radiation left over from the Big Bang discovered the Cold Spot, a larger-than-expected unusually cold area of the sky. The physics surrounding the Big Bang theory predicts warmer and cooler spots of various sizes in the infant universe, but a spot this large and this cold was unexpected.

Researchers find a way to convert waste heat to electricity at nano-scale
(Phys.org)—A team of researchers working at Germany's University of Würzburg has shown that a theory developed to describe a way to convert waste heat in microelectronics to electricity can work in the real world. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the team describes how they used quantum dots to create a three terminal device capable of generating electricity by harvesting waste heat.
