MESSENGER's Endgame: Hover Campaign Promises Bird’s-Eye View of Mercury’s Surface

MESSENGER will not go gentle into that good night. The mission will end sometime this spring, when the spacecraft runs out of propellant and the force of solar gravity causes it to impact the surface of Mercury. But the team initiated a “hover” observation campaign designed to gather scientific data from the planet at ultra-low altitudes until the last possible moment. Engineers have devised a series of orbit-correction maneuvers (OCMs) over the next five weeks — the first of which was carried out today — designed to delay the inevitable impact a bit longer.

Aurora in the Backyard

On the night of March 17/18 this umbrella of northern lights unfolded over backyards in Vallentuna, Sweden about 30 kilometers north of Stockholm. A result of the strongest geomagnetic storm of this solar cycle, auroral displays were captured on that night from back and front yards at even lower latitudes, including sightings in the midwestern United States. A boon for aurora hunting skywatchers, the space storm began building when a coronal mass ejection, launched by solar activity some two days earlier, struck planet Earth's magnetosphere. So what's the name of the backyard observatory on the right of the wide field view? That's Carpe Noctem Observatory, of course.

A digitally-colored space image for to create a rosy hue to match the theme. In April 2011 for the 21st Anniversary of Hubble, NASA released a lovely image of two galaxies interacting to form what looks like a rose with stem. Together the pair are "Arp 273". The larger of the spiral galaxies UGC 1810 is being pulled into a distorted "rose" spiral thanks to to the gravitational influence of the companion "stem" galaxy below it (UGC 1813).
