Study demonstrates that quantum holograms could be a candidate for becoming quantum information memory

Biological membranes are mainly composed of lipid bilayers. Gaining a better understanding of adsorption of solution ions onto lipid membranes helps clarify functional processes in biological cells. Now, a new study provides a quantitative description of the equilibria between lipid membranes and surrounding solution ions. Joanna KotyƄska and Zbigniew Figaszewski from the University of Bialystok, Poland, are the authors of a study describing these findings, just published in the European Physical Journal E. In addition to shedding some light on biological processes, these results could also have implications for, among other things, the future development of medical diagnostics.

Man who stole 190-million-year-old dinosaur footprint gets house arrest

Science Focus

original post »
US Bureau of Land Management

A Utah man was sentenced to a year probation, half of which must be served under house arrest, and fined $15,000 Monday after pleading guilty to stealing a fossilized dinosaur footprint believed to be 190 million years old.

Grand County Sheriff's Office
The defendant, Jared Ehlers, 35, said he was "sorry" for unhinging the 150-pound sandstone slab in the Sand Flats Recreation Area of Southeastern Utah and dumping the three-toed print into the Colorado River.

"I don't have a lot to say," Ehlers said during sentencing before US District Judge Dale Kimball. "I'm just extremely sorry for a horrible decision that I made."

While on the Hell's Revenge trail, Ehlers saw that the footprint was loose. He pried it up and took it to his nearby Moab home. Federal authorities said he dumped the print after being questioned about the print. He pleaded guilty in July to a felony count of theft of a paleontological resource. [PDF]

Why some men develop signs of pregnancy

Science Focus

original post »

Harry Ashby, the 29-year-old security guard who was signed off work with morning sickness, cravings, a growing stomach and breasts during his girlfriend's pregnancy, was told he had Couvade syndrome.

Couvade is an involuntary manifestation of pregnancy in men with a partner who is expecting a baby — sometimes called "sympathetic pregnancy." It isn't a medically recognized physical or mental disorder, and it isn't explained by injury or illness.

A range of "pregnancy-related" physical and psychological symptoms include abdominal pain and bloating, back pain, pseudocyesis (euphemistically...

Monogram, Witch Head Nebula deep space image Sticker

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: monogram initials, star galaxies, outer space picture, deep space astronomy, wtchneb, witch head nebula, cursing witch, nasa space photograph, faces in space, witches curse, screaming witch

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A witch appears to be screaming out into space in this image from NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE. The infrared portrait shows the Witch Head nebula, named after its resemblance to the profile of a wicked witch. Astronomers say the billowy clouds of the nebula, where baby stars are brewing, are being lit up by massive stars. Dust in the cloud is being hit with starlight, causing it to glow with infrared light, which was picked up by WISE's detectors.
The Witch Head nebula is estimated to be hundreds of light-years away in the Orion constellation, just off the famous hunter's knee.
WISE was recently "awakened" to hunt for asteroids in a program called NEOWISE. The reactivation came after the spacecraft was put into hibernation in 2011, when it completed two full scans of the sky, as planned.

The Day After Mars

October 31, 1938 was the day after Martians encountered planet Earth, and everything was calm. Reports of the invasion were revealed to be part of a Halloween radio drama, the now famous broadcast based on H.G. Wells' scifi novel War of the Worlds. On Mars October 20, 2014 was calm too, the day after its close encounter with Comet Siding Spring. Not a hoax, this comet really did come within 86,700 miles or so of Mars, about 1/3 the Earth-Moon distance. Earth's spacecraft and rovers in Mars orbit and on the surface reported no ill effects though, and had a ringside seat as a visitor from the outer solar system passed by. Spanning over 2 degrees against stars of the constellation Ophiuchus, this colorful telescopic snapshot captures our view of Mars on the day after. Bluish star 51 Ophiuchi is at the upper right and the comet is just emerging from the Red Planet's bright glare.

What is the oldest star in the Universe? (Synopsis)

“Let others praise ancient times; I am glad I was born in these.” -Ovid

With all that we know of astronomy, with the hundreds of billions of galaxies and hundreds of billions of stars in each that we know are there, it might surprise you to learn that the stars — for the most part — don’t segregate themselves by age, but rather live together in well-mixed populations.

So how, then could we possibly hope to find the oldest stars that are out there? Believe it or not, we have more than just a simple clue, and we’ve been able to go farther back than most people ever imagined.

Researchers control interplay of light and matter at the level of individual photons emitted by rubidium

Researchers led by Dr. Sebastian Slama of TĂŒbingen University's Institute of Physics have succeeded in directing the fluorescence of ultracold atoms into surface plasmons – light waves oscillating across a metal surface. Quantum physicists aim to create tiny systems in which things such as the interplay of light and matter may be observed at the level of individual photons. Such controlled systems hold the promise of applications such as transistors and switches depending on a single photon. The results have been published online in Nature Physics.

Monogram, Rings of Gas Giant Saturn - solar system Round Stickers

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: monogram initials, star galaxies, astronomy pictures, strnmxtlt, outer space picture, hubble space image, rings of saturn, gas giant astronomy, solar system planet, ice particles, rocky debris, planetary bodies

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A stunning image of Saturn, taken when the planet's rings were at their maximum tilt of 27 degrees toward Earth. Saturn experiences seasonal tilts away from and toward the Sun, much the same way Earth does. This happens over the course of its 29.5-year orbit. This means that approximately every 30 years, Earth observers can catch their best glimpse of Saturn's South Pole and the southern side of the planet's rings. Between March and April 2003, researchers took full advantage to study the gas giant at maximum tilt. They used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to capture detailed images of Saturn's Southern Hemisphere and the southern face of its rings.

Flying qubits make for a highly resilient quantum memory

(Phys.org) —In a quantum memory, the basic unit of data storage is the qubit. Because a qubit can exist in a superposition state of both "1" and "0" at the same time, it can process much more information than a classical bit. However, qubits are often very unstable due to decoherence, currently making them impractical for real-life memory storage.
