Dark Energy Survey creates detailed guide to spotting dark matter in the cosmos

Scientists on the Dark Energy Survey have released the first in a series of dark matter maps of the cosmos. These maps, created with one of the world's most powerful digital cameras, are the largest contiguous maps created at this level of detail and will improve our understanding of dark matter's role in the formation of galaxies.

Mars might have salty liquid water

Researchers have long known that there is water in the form of ice on Mars. Now, new research shows that it is possible that there is liquid water close to the surface of Mars. The explanation is that the substance perchlorate has been found in the soil, which lowers the freezing point so the water does not freeze into ice, but is liquid and present in very salty water -- a brine.

Large Hadron Collider restarts after 2 years of maintenance

Science Focus

original post »

After being shut down for two years, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is back online, CERN announced Sunday.

"Today at 10:41am [local time], a proton beam was back in the 27-kilometer ring, followed at 12:27pm by a second beam rotating in the opposite direction," the European Organization for Nuclear Research reported in a statement.

"These beams circulated at their injection energy of 450 GeV. Over the coming days, operators will check all systems before increasing energy of the beams."

Mystery of peryton reception at Australian observatory solved: It's from microwave ovens

(Phys.org)—A team of researchers working at Australia's Parkes Observatory has found the source of at least one kind of peryton—a type of radio signal similar to Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) which are known to come from somewhere else in the galaxy—microwave ovens in a kitchen nearby. The team has written about their investigation and findings in a paper they have uploaded to the arXiv preprint server.

Tadpole Nebula, Auriga Constellation Star Stickers

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: envelope sealers, star forming activity, awesome astronomy images, tnitac, tadpole nebula, auriga constellation, new born stars, hot young stars, star nursery, dust clouds, interstellar gas clouds

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series An awesome outer space picture featuring the Tadpole Nebula, a star forming hub located about 12000 light years away in the Auriga constellation.
This nebula is brimming with new-born stars, many as young as only a million years of age. It's called the Tadpole nebula because the masses of hot, young stars are blasting out ultraviolet radiation that has etched the gas into two tadpole-shaped pillars, called Sim 129 and130, the yellow forms that seem to be swimming away from the three red stars close to the centre of the picture.

Helix Nebula, Galaxies and Stars Star Stickers

Here's a great sheet of stickers featuring a beautiful image from deep space

tagged with: star nurseries, star clusters, galaxies, stars, astronomy, nebulae, helixneb, helix nebula, starfields, european southern observatory, eso, vista

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series A fantastic colour-composite image of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293). It was created from images obtained using the Wide Field Imager (WFI), an astronomical camera attached to the 2.2-metre Max-Planck Society/ESO telescope at the La Silla observatory in Chile.

The blue-green glow in the centre of the Helix comes from oxygen atoms shining under effects of the intense ultraviolet radiation of the 120 000 degree Celsius central star and the hot gas.

Further out from the star and beyond the ring of knots, the red colour from hydrogen and nitrogen is more prominent. A careful look at the central part of this object reveals not only the knots, but also many remote galaxies seen right through the thinly spread glowing gas.
